INSEAD x StashAway Webinar, October 5th, 2021

An inside look into StashAway, as Michele Ferrario (Co-founder and CEO of StashAway) explained how their technology and investment strategy sets them from other traditional financial advisors and digital wealth advisors. We looked at how Stashaway’s technology personalises your portfolios, and how it intelligently manages your investments.

Bio of the Speaker:
Michele spent half of his career in and around financial services, as a consultant to large financial institutions at McKinsey & Co., and then as a Private Equity investor. He then spent the second part of his career building consumer internet companies, most recently as Group CEO of ZALORA, where he was responsible for it growing 15x and becoming the undisputed leader in the market. Michele holds an MBA from Columbia Business School and in 2016 was invited by Singapore’s Minister of Finance to be a member of the Singapore’s Committee for the Future of the Economy.

The Investment Management Club is hosted a webinar with the Chairman & CIO of Endowus, Samuel Rhee, on Tuesday June 1st, 2021. Sam shared his insights on investing, fintech, and entrepreneurship.

Endowus is a Singapore-based financial technology company that empowers people to take control of their financial future. The firm’s proprietary systems provide data-driven wealth advice in constructing personalised solutions. The firm provides its end-to-end digital solution to individual and institutional investors. Sam has over 26 years of investment experience, spending the bulk of that time at Morgan Stanley. He is the former Chief Executive Officer and Chief Investment Officer at Morgan Stanley Investment Management in Asia.

Responsible Investing Talk, 14 October 2019,

NN Investment Partner’s France CEO, Mr Philippe Fidaire, gave a lunchtime talk on Responsible Investing at INSEAD’s Fontainebleau campus. The session was moderated by INSEAD Professor Lucie Tepla.

Paris Trek, 28 August 2019, 

INSEAD IMC organized a Paris Trek for students to learn more about investment and industry trends. We are thankful to Stéphane Corsaletti (CEO, ABN AMRO Investment Solutions), Julia Kung (Portfolio Manager, Amundi) and Martin Burke (Head of Range Management, AXA Investment Managers), for hosting us and sharing their knowledge and experiences.

Congratulations to the INSEAD 17D team!

Our INSEAD team came 3rd among more than 20 schools

In the final round our INSEAD team competed with schools such as Princeton, Illinois Tech, Georgetown, LBS, EGADE, IPADE, USC Marshal, Vlerick and managed to grab the 3rd place in the competition based on investment returns and strategy presentation.

The strategy was based on an active-passive managed strategy combining satellite portfolios containing high-conviction stocks to generate additional alpha based on research and knowledge.

INSEAD Live Financial Market Trading

INSEAD students are invited to take part in the same practical financial market training that now gets delivered in both London and New York to the world’s largest financial institutions including JPMorgan, Bank of America, HSBC and Citigroup.

The computer laboratory will be converted into a fully operational live trading floor and candidates will be taken through an intense programme of how to risk manage their own trading desk and execute across assets in live market prices. This event is designed specifically to help candidates bridge the gap between a theoretical understanding of financial markets and practical implementation them.

 

14 April 2014, Europe Campus

IMC Trading Game (Live Trading Simulation)

This event is designed to expose candidates to live market trading dynamics as they execute investment decisions. You will need to be able to take a key series of decisions, whose results will be quickly reflected through your trading.

In the week leading up to the trading day, candidates will be given relevant training materials to help them prepare for the event. As part of the training, you will be taken through the key market drivers and the fundamental theory behind asset class correlations to help you to manage your positions across stock index futures, commodities, foreign exchange and fixed income derivatives. Preparation will also cover behavioural finance and trading psychology. Risk management is fundamental to any trading role and candidates will be expected to stay within the risk parameters given.

After an introduction to the trading systems and a study into key technical analysis tools, candidates will move to the trading terminal, provided by Amplify Trading.

The Investment Management Club along with the Environment and Business Club would like to invite you to a presentation on the Principles of Responsible Investment by Maria Tinelli, the Head of Networks at PRI, a UN led initiative that promotes the incorporation of environmental and social considerations in investment decisions.

Over 1200 investment institutions representing $ 34 trillion assets under management have signed up to the PRI. Many institutional investors require that their Investment Managers are a signatory to the PRI.

Maria will talk about responsible investment and what it means in practice. She will also talk specifically about the PRI, the growth of the initiative around the world and how becoming a Signatory will help you implement ESG (environment and social governance) in practice. In addition to trends and best practice in responsible investment.

 

About the Speaker

Maria Laura Tinelli

joined PRI in April 2012 as Head of Networks. She worked for many years in the insurance sector in Europe and Latin America, then moving into International Development, managing large multinational sustainable development projects across Latin America, South East Asia and Africa. She has an MSc in Development Studies from the University of London, School of Oriental and African Studies, and a degree in International Relations from the University of Belgrano in Argentina. She currently manages the work and development of Networks across Latin America, Asia, Southern Africa, Europe and Canada.

27 & 28 February 2013, London Trek

Eight members of the Fontainebleau IMC embarked on the London trek on February 27-28, 2013. The delegation visited five major asset management firms, including Fidelity Investments, Pacific Alternative Asset Management Company (PAAMCO), Generation Investments, Orbis, and Alcentra. They also networked with INSEAD alumni from Nomura Asset Management, Blackrock, Sanford Bernstein, and Goldman Sachs Asset Management.

19 December 2012, Paris Trek #3

On December 19, IMC organized another Paris trek where INSEAD students visited Verrazzano Capital SAS, an independent investment manager specializing in European Equities, headquartered in Paris. The firm was founded in 2011 by Guillaume Rambourg, formerly of Gartmore Investment Management Limited. Guillaume worked for Gartmore from 1995-2010, where he co-managed both equity long only and equity long short portfolios. Verrazzano launched two equity long/short hedge funds, European Opportunities and European Focus on 1st March, 2012. As of July, 2012, firm AUM is circa $530M.

9 November 2012, Paris Trek #2

On November 9, IMC Fontainebleau organized the second Paris Trek of the year.  Four members from the club visited Banque Leonardo, a wealth management firm focusing on private clients. The team received a warm welcome from Régis de Pampelonne, founder of the firm and an MBA’77 INSEAD alumni. Banque Leonardo is currently a subsidiary of Leonardo & Co., a European financial advisory firm offering independent advice in corporate finance, M&A, equity, debt financing and restructuring.

 

In the afternoon, IMC members also visited Financière de l’Echiquier, a leading French investment management company that manages €4.6 billion in mutual funds invested in the main equities and bonds markets for retail and institutional investors.

25 October 2012, Paris Trek #1

On Oct. 25, IMC Fontainebleau organized the Paris Trek for the first time.  Five members from the club visited Exane, a leading long/short equity fund manager headquartered in Paris. The team spoke with key figures from Ellipsis Asset Management, Exane Derivatives and Exane Asset Management. It was a fantastic opportunity to get industry insights, interact with people in the field and most importantly gather more interest in and support for the club.

Current Trends in Hedge Fund Investing by Judith Posnikoff, Ph.D, Co-Founder and Managing Director, Pacific Alternative Asset Management Co (PAAMCO).

 

Biography: Judith Posnikoff, PhD is one of the founders of and a managing director at Pacific Alternative Asset Management Co., LLC, a global institutional fund-of-hedge funds firm based in Irvine, California and established in 2000. As chair of the firm’s Investment Oversight Committee, Judy is involved in all stages of the investment process. She additionally oversees the firm’s client and marketing efforts in the Asia-Pacific region. Judy is a member of the founding board of directors of the Association of Women in Alternative Investing (AWAI) and is on the board of the CAIA Foundation. Judy is also on the scholarship committee of the 100 Women in Hedge Funds Institute.

 


10 & 11 September 2012Geneva Investment & Commodity Trek

IMC organized a trek to Geneva to meet the top investment managers and commodity firms and obtain an insider’s glimpse into their workings. Our host firms include Pictet Asset Management, Capital Group of Companies, Julius Baer, Union Bancaire Privee, Lombard Odier Asset Management, Jabre Capital, Notz Stucki, Argos Manager, Bordier & Cie, Trafigura and Cargill. Following the trek, there is also an alumni networking session organized in collaboration with the Insead Swiss Alumni Association.

 


6 & 7 September 2012, London Investment Trek

The IMC visited London for the second time in 2012.  Participants engaged research analysts and portfolio managers at some of the top investment managers.  Among them: Fidelity, Capital Group, M&G Investments, Blue Mountain Capital,Sanford Bernstein and T. Rowe Price.

 


24 August 2012, Singapore Investment Trek

GIC kicked off IMC’s first multi-manager tour of Singapore, in a special pre-P1 event for 13J organised by 12D.  Besides broadly summarising its investment philosophy and history, Singapore’s low profile, foreign reserves fund touched upon its teams’ surprisingly youthful demography and the outstanding responsibilities entrusted to incoming associates.  GIC left no doubt as to the importance of commitment among its staff.  After GIC, students visited with Putnam Investments, Flowering Tree Capital, Tudor Capital, M&G Investments, and Deutsche Asset Management.  Despite a fully booked day of meetings, students valiantly soldiered into the night for alumni drinks with representatives from Sentosa Capital, Ichigo Asset Management, Credit Suisse, Standard Chartered and others.

       Investing in Asian Special Situations

Tan Chin Hwee, a prominent investor in Asia, delivered the case of China Forestry in his first presentation at INSEAD.  Insights from his financial statements analysis led to cogent explanations outlining the distinctive aspects of his investment philosophy and process.  At the core of the presentation was Chin Hwee’s individual story, described through the lens of professional experiences and personal values.  An hour-long glimpse of the world through the eyes of an influential investor.

       NYSE Euronext Paris

IMC members rang the market’s opening bell in this one day trek to the Paris bourse.  Members learned the exchange’s history and evolution, up to its present standing as a portal to Euronext, the world’s first integrated cross-border exchange.  Presentations by various business groups included European Cash Markets, Surveillance Room and MiFID.  One department head hosted a live case study on privatisation of retail flow, a topic with insight into the interplay between the business and regulatory environment and its impact on stock exchanges.

Investing in Real Estate: IMC, in collaboration with the INSEAD Real Estate Club, organized an event on June 21, 2012 in Amphi Dean Berry about “Investing in Real Estate”. The speakers were Mr. Jan Verschueren and Professor Lahlou Khelifi who talked about Real Estate investing & finance, the global trends in the industry, and their experiences followed by a networking event. This was a hugely successful event, providing an opportunity to student to meet and network with professionals focusing in Real Estate within Investment Management, a unique asset class that influence us daily.

 

Lahlou Khelifi, Visiting Professor of Strategy

Prof Lahlou Khélifi has over twenty years of experience in real estate financing and investment. After studying law and economics and obtaining a degree in Local Administration, Lahlou Khélifi graduated from the Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris (where he majored in Urban Studies). He has an MBA from INSEAD.

Jan Verschueren – Fund & Asset Manager, Generali Real Estate, Paris

With over ten years of experience in the construction sector (Bouygues), within listed real estate companies (Klépierre and Prologis) and in asset management (DTZ Asset Management and currently within Generali Real Estate), Jan acquired the expertise of analysing investment returns when developing or acquiring real estate assets, and of optimizing value during the investments’ holding period.

In parallel to investment management, Jan coordinated photovoltaic projects on Prologis’ assets (2007-2009), participated in Prologis’ environmental stewardship working group (2009-2011) and currently participates in the sustainability working group within Generali Real Estate.

As member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), Jan participates in its French sustainability workgroup.

Jan studied at the University of Antwerp (Belgium),  at ESCP Europe (France) and holds an MBA from INSEAD (J06).

Understanding Investment Management: IMC organized a conference call with Antoine Bachmann (‘93D) to helps its members better understand investment management, various options and routes to becoming a successful portfolio manager/investment analyst and how best to weather the current market conditions. Antoine has over 20 years of experience within investment management. He spent 15 years with The Capital Group of Companies and then in 2009 started his own fund management business in Switzerland. The call was jointly hosted by Fontainebleau and Singapore campuses.

Investment Brunch, Paris

IMC organized an alumni brunch to discuss and debate current trends within the investment management industry.  The event, held at Café Hugo Place de Vosges, featured representatives from AXA Investment Managers and Doric Asset Management.


8 & 9 March 2012, London Investment Trek

The end of P1/P3 marked the first IMC trek of the year, in which the club visited various investment managers and met with their esteemed representatives, including the co-founder and chairman of Generation Investment Management, Al Gore.  The former U.S. vice president advocated for a specific model of sustainable capitalism, one that prescribes concrete policies to integrate long-term value creation with ESG metrics.  Featured hosts in addition to Generation included PIMCO, Fidelity, Partners Capital, and Orbis.
